Step 1

Applicant must contact the registered Aircraft Training Organisation where he/she will be conducting your Check/training. The ATO will contact the SACAA on behalf of the applicant and apply for Verification of your foreign licence as well as a licence number. By applying for a “converted licence”, you apply for a full South African Licence which can be upgraded and new ratings may be added on the issued licence in South Africa.

  To get a license number so that you may write the SACAA online exams, the ATO will contact the examination department, at the SACAA:

Amanda Haverkamp haverkampam@caa.co.za

  A copy of your foreign license

  A motivational letter stating that you need a South African license number so that you can write the exams for your foreign license conversion.

  Your full CV

  2 x passport photos (colour or b&w as you prefer)

At present there is no fee for this.

Step 2

SACAA will request Verification with Foreign Authorities

Verifying the Application with the Foreign Governing Body/CAA and this process may take

2 weeks – 6 months depending on their response. It will be your responsibility to contact the foreign Aviation Authority to request them to release your personal details, in order for the SACAA to verify your foreign licence. Most countries either request an online application and prescribed fee or you must apply for a foreign verification letter from the contracting state. Note, if you are applying with a FAA licence, the SACAA will request an incident/accident report.
